Stewart Copeland

Drummer Stewart Copeland was born in Alexandria, VA to a couple of intelligence agents (Miles Copeland, Jr. and Lorraine Adie). It wasn't long before he traveled to Egypt with his parents and grew up in the Middle East. The family moved to Beirut, Lebanon in 1957 and started playing the drums at 12. It took him a year to get booked for school dances. In 1967 his family moved to merry old England and he went to school there from 1967 to 1969. He attended California colleges California Western University and UC Berkeley. He played drums for Curved Air when he moved back to England in 1975.

Sting

Born Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner but known world wide as Sting has 16 Grammys to his name. The multi-talented Sting has an Academy Award nomination as well. Between his solo sales and sales with the Police he has over 45 million records.

He was born in England and his mother was a hairdresser. He was the 1st of 4 children. His dad managed a dairy and Gordon would help with chores around the dairy. Gordon's Irish grandmother saw to it that he was raised Roman Catholic.

Gordon left college after the 1st term to pursue his musical interests. He managed to get into nightclubs like the Club-A-Go-Go and rock greats Jack Bruce and Jimi Hendrix. Gordon tried a variety of jobs before he went back to college to become a teacher.

Andy Summers

Andy was born in England and taught himself the guitar. He did, however, study classical guitar at California State University at Northridge (CSUN). He played jazz guitar in the local teen clubs and worked in a music store during his teen years.

In the 60s he played guitar for Zoot Money's Big Roll Band which became Dantalian's Chariot. Both groups were popular with the London crowd. He briefly played for Soft Machine. He was fortunate to record on the Animals' Love Is and did session work for such hot groups as Joan Armatrading, Jon Lord, Kevin Ayers, Kevin Coyne, Neil Sedaka, and Tim Rose. He became close to replacing Rolling Stones' Mick Taylor but lost out to Ronnie Wood.

He changed his name from Somers in the 70s to avoid misspellings.

Formation

Stewart Copeland founded the Police in 1977 after the demise of Curved Air. He was rehearsing with Sting and Henry Padovani in January 1977. They recorded their 1st Police single in February and toured with Cherry Vanilla and Wayne County & the Electric Chairs.

Mike Howlett lured the trio to play in Strontium 90 for a Gong reunion. They made demos and played the Gong reunion concert. Some of the live and studio tracks made it onto a Police Academy album. Included was an early version of "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic". The fab four also played local clubs under the name of The Elevators.

By July 1977 they were playing as the Police. Padovani didn't last long with the band. The remaining three are the Police as we all know and love them.

The ever versatile Sting proved his song writing abilities and wrote lyrics with astute literary awareness and verbal agility. He was, after all, an English professor. Arthur Koestler inspired Sting to write Ghost In The Machine lyrics while Carl Jung inspired Synchronicity. Paul Bowles shows his influence in Synchronicity's "Tea in the Sahara"

They were one of two mainstream bands to include reggae style in their music and make them international hits. Ska was well known in the UK but pretty unheard of in the US. Eric Clapton's 1974 cover of "I Shot the Sheriff" was one of the few exceptions. Another exception was Desmond Dekker's "Israelites" and "007".

The blonde hair of the group was really an accident. They had just shot a Wrigley's commercial where they had to dye their hair.
