The Outlandos d'Amour album was done with very little money and without a manager or record contract. Miles Copeland got them a contract with A&M Records after hearing "Roxanne". It's 1979 re-release made the Police very popular throughout the UK. The song was a worldwide hit and especially popular in Australia. They got a gig in New York City's CBGB and a US tour in which the band and equipment were transported in a Ford van.

The Police were fabulously popular in Australia on their tour and fans couldn't wait for releases out of the UK. Triple J in Sydney (Australia's non-commercial rock radio station) pushed them and soon videos were being shown on Countdown

Zenyatta Mondatta came out in fall 1980 with super singles like "Don't Stand So Close to Me", and "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da". By this time the Police were truly an internationally famous band. Sting wasn't pleased with the rush to production. Critics loved the album. "Behind My Camel" won a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance even without Sting playing on the track. The album also took home the Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance For Duo Or Group with "Don't Stand So Close To Me" .

Sting Becomes a Star

Sting made a career for himself in acting so was a major star even with The Police. He appeared in Dune, Quadrophenia, Radio On, and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.

His fame led to a deteriorating relationship with Stewart. Worldwide publicity, huge egos, and financial success strained the partnership with the band. Adding to the pressure both were divorced during this period. They both remarried.

1981's Ghost in the Machine had a number of hits like "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", "Invisible Sun", and "Spirits in the Material World". The band settled for 3 digital pictures for the cover since they couldn't agree on a single picture. Both Sting and Andy moved to Ireland for tax purposes.

The Police took 1982 off while Sting ventured into acting in Brimstone and Treacle. Sting also scored a hit with the theme song,"Spread A Little Happiness" . Summers recorded Advance Masked.

1983's Synchronicity had hits like "Every Breath You Take", "King of Pain" , "Synchronicity II", and "Wrapped Around Your Finger". All but "King of Pain" were accompanied by music videos. The album hit #1 on the UK & US charts and got a Grammy nomination for best album. The album took home the Grammy for Song Of The Year plus the Grammy for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal with "Every Breath You Take".
